Dr. Michael King

The Experience and Philosophy Behind Red Oak Dentistry

Dr. Michael King, DMD, has spent 15 years practicing dentistry with the kind of intention and precision that most high-volume offices simply can't afford to offer. His path to Red Oak Dentistry is anything but ordinary.

Born in London, England, Dr. King grew up across some of the most distinct corners of the world — Alaska, where his father was a bush pilot, and the coastlines of Northern and Southern California. His education took him through the University of New Hampshire and the University of Memphis before the U.S. Navy became the training ground that would define his clinical foundation.

Dr. King completed Navy AEGD training and served 10 years on active duty — stationed in Yokosuka, Japan, San Diego and Coronado, California, and Camp Lejeune, North Carolina — before transitioning to 3.5 years in the Naval Reserves. That background instilled a discipline and attention to detail that carries directly into his dentistry today.

After leaving the Navy, Dr. King spent time in corporate dentistry, where he saw an opportunity to create a more personal, patient-centered experience. He wanted the freedom to spend more time with each patient, provide care without compromise, and build a practice around the standard he believed people deserved. So he built Red Oak Dentistry from the ground up, designed around quality, honesty, and the kind of personal care that actually makes a difference in people’s lives.

Today, Dr. King is a proud member of the ADA and AGD. He especially enjoys crown and bridge treatment, Invisalign, and extractions — and brings the same level of craft and attention to every service he offers. He works under high magnification, takes the extra steps most offices overlook, and gives every patient his complete, undivided focus.

What drives him most is simple: getting to know his patients, understanding their stories, and solving the problems that improve their health, their confidence, and their quality of life. Outside the office, Dr. King loves spending time with his wife, Shannon, and their two children. He also enjoys being outdoors, especially mountain biking, hiking, rock climbing, and playing soccer.

What to Bring

When it’s time for your first visit, there are only a few things you’ll need to bring with you:

Insurance information, if applicable

A list of any questions or concerns you'd like to discuss

A Higher Standard of Care

At Red Oak Dentistry, the commitment to excellence extends beyond clinical care. The office itself was designed to reflect the same values that guide every appointment — advanced, intentional, and genuinely comfortable.

Advanced Air Filtration & Closed-Door Operatories

Red Oak Dentistry is uniquely equipped to serve immunocompromised patients, those undergoing chemotherapy, and patients who remain cautious about airborne illness. Every treatment room features a door that closes, advanced filtration throughout the office and operatories, a specialized HVAC filtration system, and N-95 protocols for high-risk patients or upon request.

Medit i700 Intraoral Scanner

The Medit i700 intraoral scanner reflects the practice's commitment to modern, technology-forward care — supporting greater precision, comfort, and accuracy in treatment planning and delivery.

A clear view of your care

Every treatment room is equipped with a large TV, adding an element of comfort and ease to what can sometimes feel like an intimidating environment. Patients can relax during their visit while Dr. King also uses the screen to walk patients through X-rays, intraoral photos, and any areas of concern.

Beverage Station

From the moment you arrive, Red Oak Dentistry is designed to feel welcoming. The beverage station is one of many small touches that sets the tone for a visit that feels more like a destination than an obligation.

Soft Blankets, Neck Pillows & Stress Balls

For patients who want a little extra comfort, soft blankets are available on request, along with neck pillows and stress balls. It's the kind of thoughtfulness that makes a difference, especially for patients who experience dental anxiety.

Rooted in our community

Red Oak Dentistry has a history of supporting meaningful causes in the Raleigh community. Past outreach efforts have included work with UNC Children's Hospital and providing free dentistry through a homeless veterans program — a cause especially close to the heart of a practice led by a veteran himself.

This spirit of service and compassion remains very much a part of who we are at Red Oak Dentistry.
